On my windows laptop, I have Visionapp which allows me to connect to anything via RDP, VNC, SSH, Telnet, whatever and save the connections. however, you need something else to connect to Windows machines.
as such, it makes it easy to manage and connect to Apple machines. ARD is just a nice, all-inclusive software that is built by apple.
